In the 1970s, the Finn Esa-Pekka Salonen was a co-founder and leading light of the "ears open" society, an association of young composers opposed to the established concert industry and its conservative programming policies. A dyed-in-the-wool hardliner until 1983, Salonen stepped in at short notice to conduct London's Philharmonia Orchestra and literally overnight became the great hope of the international music industry.
